City: Havana

Havana, Cuba's capital suspended in time, is a feast for the senses where colonial grandeur elegantly crumbles. It is a city defined by the rhythm of salsa escaping from the windows, the roar of classic American cars, the aroma of tobacco and rum, and the unwavering energy of its people. From the majesty of Old Havana to the melancholy of the Malecón, it is an experience that captivates and transforms.

It is a very safe destination for families and Cubans love children, but the lack of modern infrastructure can be a challenge.

Extremely low violent crime, which makes it very safe. The culture is very family-oriented and children are welcome everywhere.Riding classic cars is fun for all ages.
Uneven sidewalks and lack of ramps make strollers difficult to use.Shortages can make it difficult to find specific products for children (diapers, formula).

Safety

90

One of the safest large cities in Latin America in terms of violent crime. The main problem is petty theft and scams.

Violent crimes are extremely rare, especially against tourists. It is safe to walk in most areas, even at night.A strong police presence visible in tourist areas.
Petty theft can occur in busy areas. You have to be alert to 'riders' and common scams (incorrect invoices, false offers).

Cleanliness

60

Variable. The main squares of Old Havana are kept clean for tourists, but many other areas suffer from deteriorating infrastructure and accumulation of garbage.

The recently restored areas of Old Havana are clean.Strong community pride that keeps home interiors clean.
Decaying infrastructure makes cleaning on many streets difficult. The scarcity of resources affects public services.

Tips for Family

Stay in a 'Casa Particular'

It is the best way to experience Cuban culture. You stay in a room in a local family's house. They are affordable, comfortable, and the hosts are an incredible source of information.

Go to the Cuban Art Factory at night

It's not just a museum. It is the most vibrant and modern place in Havana. Arrive early to avoid the long lines.

Tip is very important

State salaries are very low. A small tip (around 10%) for waiters, guides and musicians makes a big difference and is greatly appreciated.

Ask permission to take photos

Be respectful when taking photos of people, especially close-up portraits. They will often ask you for a small tip in return, especially if they are dressed in traditional costumes.

Bring your own medications and toiletries

Shortages are common. Don't count on being able to buy things like pain relievers, Band-Aids, sunscreen, or toilet paper. Bring it all with you.

Drink only bottled water

Never drink tap water. Make sure the bottles you buy are well sealed.

Beware of the 'Jineteros'

They are people who approach tourists to offer them services (cigars, restaurants, taxis). They can be kind but very persistent. A polite but firm 'No, thank you' is the best response.

Common scams

Be wary of cheap cigar offers on the street (they are often fake) and always check your bill in restaurants. Ask for a menu with prices to avoid surprises.
