Gastronomy in Greece
Gastronomía

Mediterranean flavors

Greek gastronomy is a celebration of simplicity and quality of the product. Based on the 'Mediterranean triad' - olive oil, wheat and wine - it is a fresh, healthy cuisine full of flavour. Fresh vegetables, legumes, cheeses, yogurt and fish are the stars of a diet that is much more than moussaka and souvlaki.

Must-Try Dishes

Horiatiki (Greek Salad)

The authentic Greek salad does not have lettuce. It is a fresh mix of tomato, cucumber, green pepper, red onion and Kalamata olives, topped with a large piece of feta cheese and generously dressed with oregano and extra virgin olive oil.

Moussaka

Moussaka

A hearty and delicious dish. It consists of layers of eggplant (and sometimes potato), minced meat stewed with tomato and a creamy bechamel sauce on top, all baked until golden brown.

Gyros

Souvlaki and Gyros

They are the Greek fast food par excellence. Souvlaki are grilled meat skewers, while gyros is meat roasted on a vertical spit. Both are often served wrapped in pita bread with tomato, onion, French fries, and tzatziki sauce.

Tzatziki

The most famous sauce or appetizer in Greece. A refreshing blend of thick Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil and a touch of dill or mint. Perfect to accompany meats or simply to dip pita bread.

Spanakopita and Tiropita

Savory pastries made with crispy filo dough. The spanakopita is filled with spinach and feta cheese, while the tirapita only has a mixture of cheeses. Ideal for breakfast or a snack.

Grilled Octopus (Oktapodi sta Karvouna)

A classic of coastal taverns. The octopus is boiled and then grilled until tender on the inside and lightly charred on the outside. It is simply served with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon.

Typical Drinks

Ouzo

Ouzo

The most famous anise appetizer in Greece. It is a strong liquor that turns whitish when water or ice is added. It is drunk slowly, accompanied by 'mezedes'.

Wine

Greek Wine (Krasi)

Greece has an ancient wine tradition. Don't miss the fresh, mineral whites of Santorini (Assyrtiko) or the controversial but traditional Retsina, a white or rosé wine flavored with pine resin.

Frappe

The cold coffee par excellence, invented in Greece. It is prepared by vigorously stirring instant coffee, sugar and a little water until creating a thick foam, to which cold water, ice and, optionally, milk are then added.

Tsipouro / Raki

A powerful grape pomace distillate, similar to Italian grappa. It is the drink of hospitality and camaraderie, especially in Crete (where it is called raki) and in northern Greece.

Traditional Sweets

Baklava

Baklava

A sweet and dense dessert made with layers of filo pastry, chopped walnuts and dipped in a honey or syrup syrup. A legacy of the Ottoman era present throughout the region.

Loukoumades

A type of round, spongy fritters that are fried and served hot, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts. An addictive delicacy.

Greek Yogurt with Honey and Walnuts (Yiaourti me Meli)

Simplicity elevated to perfection. Creamy, thick Greek yogurt is served with a generous drizzle of local thyme honey and walnuts. A healthy and delicious dessert or breakfast.

Galaktoboureko

A pie made with layers of filo dough enclosing a creamy semolina and custard filling. Once baked, it is soaked in a syrup flavored with lemon or orange.
