For centuries, the area of present-day Shenzhen was an area of counties and market towns, the most relevant being Bao'an County. Its ancient history is that of a quiet coastal town dedicated to fishing and salt production, overshadowed by the neighboring and powerful Canton (Guangzhou).
The radical turning point in its history occurred in 1980, when Deng Xiaoping designated it as China's first Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
