Bwindi and Mgahinga are the supreme refuges of the mountain gorilla in the Virunga volcanic range. For chimpanzees, Kibale Forest is the undisputed leader, complemented by Kyambura Gorge (an underground canyon in Queen Elizabeth) and Budongo Forest near Murchison Falls.

Murchison Falls National Park stands out for the spectacular fall of the Nile and river safaris. In the east, Sipi Falls descends in three impressive stepped falls onto the slopes of the extinct Mount Elgon volcano, offering trails between Arabica coffee plantations.

Queen Elizabeth National Park surprises with its volcanic landscapes with craters and climbing lions. In the remote far northeast, Kidepo Valley National Park offers one of the most pristine and isolated savannah experiences in Africa, home to cheetahs, ostriches and large herds of buffalo.

Observing for an hour the human gestures of a silverback, the mothers caring for their young, and family interactions in absolute silence is an overwhelming and deeply transformative experience.

Cruise to the Base of Murchison Falls

In Murchison Falls National Park, the Nile River squeezes violently through a rocky gap just 7 meters wide before falling 43 meters into the void. Traveling up the river by boat to the base of the waterfall allows you to spot gigantic Nile crocodiles, elephants bathing on the shore and hundreds of birds before contemplating the thunderous cloud of steam and rainbows that forms the torrent.

Track Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest

Kibale National Park has the highest density and diversity of primates in East Africa. Walking under the thick jungle canopy guided by the thunderous howls and screams of the chimpanzees culminates in finding them eating figs in the treetops, grooming themselves on the ground or moving nimbly among vines just a few meters from you.

River Safari in the Kazinga Channel and Climbing Lions

Queen Elizabeth National Park offers two legendary experiences: a cruise along the Kazinga Natural Waterway, which connects Lakes Edward and George with one of the world's largest populations of hippos and waterfowl; and a safari through the Ishasha sector in search of the unique climbing lions resting on the branches of the giant fig trees.

Gorilla and Chimpanzee Permits

Official permits issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for tracking gorillas in Bwindi/Mgahinga and chimpanzees in Kibale have strict daily quotas. It is essential to book them several months in advance (preferably between 6 and 12 months for the dry season) through authorized agencies or directly with the UWA.

East African Visas and Tourist Visa

All visas must be processed online in advance through the official Ugandan immigration portal (there is no visa on arrival). If you plan to combine the trip with Kenya and/or Rwanda, it is much more economical and practical to apply for the joint 'East Africa Tourist Visa'.

Yellow Fever and Malaria Vaccine

The international yellow fever vaccination certificate is strictly mandatory to enter the country and is required at the border control at Entebbe airport. Likewise, there is a risk of malaria throughout the country, so it is essential to take antimalarial prophylaxis recommended by a medical center and use repellent with DEET.
