Known in ancient times as Rabbath Ammon and later as Philadelphia under Ptolemaic rule, it was one of the cities of the Roman Decapolis. Its Citadel preserves remains dating from the Bronze Age to the Umayyad period.
After centuries of relative dormancy, Amman re-emerged at the end of the 19th century with the arrival of Circassians and the construction of the Hejaz railway. In 1921, it became the capital of the Emirate of Transjordan under King Abdullah I.
In recent decades, Amman has experienced explosive growth, becoming a regional center for business, education and a haven of stability in the Middle East, notable for its urban modernization and cultural openness.
