Founded by Julius Caesar in 59 BC. as a settlement for their veteran soldiers called 'Florentia'. It grew as an important commercial city on the route between Rome and the north.

Following the decline of the Medici, the city became part of the Habsburg Empire before becoming the capital of Italy for a brief period (1865-1871). Today, its economy is based on tourism, luxury crafts (leather, jewelry) and its status as a global artistic treasure.
