I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Lille y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Lille was born in the Middle Ages as a fortified island in marshy lands (L'Isle), quickly becoming a prosperous Flemish commercial center at the confluence of European trade routes. During the 11th-14th centuries it developed a powerful textile industry, especially woolen cloth, which positioned it as one of the richest cities in the County of Flanders. Its strategic position between Paris, London and the Netherlands forged a cosmopolitan commercial identity that endures to this day.
The 15th-17th centuries saw Lille alternate between Spanish, Burgundian and French domination, developing distinctive Flemish architecture and a unique mestizo culture. The definitive annexation to France by Louis XIV (1667) brought the construction of the Vauban Citadel and French urban development, maintaining Flemish traditions. The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century made Lille the European textile capital, attracting workers from all over Europe and creating today's characteristic cultural diversity.
The 20th century transformed Lille into a modern European metropolis, especially after the arrival of the TGV (1993) and the development of Euralille as an international financial district. European Capital of Culture 2004 consolidated its cultural position, while industrial reconversion turned it into a technological, university and services hub. Today Lille leads European cross-border cooperation as the heart of the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis.
