The origins date back to the fortress of 'Hammaburg', built by order of Charlemagne at the beginning of the 9th century. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Alster and Elbe rivers allowed it to grow as an important missionary and commercial center.
His true rise came with his role as a founding member and leader of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. As an Imperial Free City, it developed a spirit of independence and commercial power that made it one of the richest cities in Europe. The Great Fire of 1842 destroyed much of the old town, which was rebuilt with modern planning.
Despite the devastation of bombing during World War II (Operation Gomorrah), the city was rebuilt and its port was reaffirmed as one of the most important in the world. In the 21st century, the HafenCity development project, the largest in Europe, and the opening of the spectacular Elbphilharmonie in 2017, have established Hamburg as a global city, a hub for cutting-edge media, logistics and culture.
