I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Bergen y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Bergen was founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre and was originally called Bjørgvin. From its beginnings, the city developed as an important commercial center thanks to its strategic coastal location. The first inhabitants were Norwegian fishermen and traders, and the city soon became a key point for trade between Norway and the rest of Europe.
During the Middle Ages, Bergen established itself as one of the most important cities in Norway and was the country's capital in the 13th century. Its role in the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading federation, was fundamental to its economic and urban growth. The Bryggen neighborhood became the main Hanseatic enclave outside of Germany, attracting merchants from all over Europe. Over the centuries, Bergen suffered several fires, but was always rebuilt, maintaining its historic character and port importance.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, Bergen has evolved as a premier cultural, educational and tourism center in Norway. It is home to important international festivals, universities and research centers. The city has modernized its infrastructure without losing its historical essence, and today is recognized for its quality of life, its commitment to sustainability and its role as the country's main cruise port.
