During Muslim domination there was a small walled area called Tirwal, which served as a watchtower. However, the founding of the current city of Teruel dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically in 1171, when King Alfonso II of Aragon established it as a military plaza to protect the Christian border against the Muslims.
