The area where Teruel is located today was inhabited since Celtiberian times, with the population called Turba. It was later conquered by the Romans. During Muslim domination there was a small walled area called Tirwal, which served as a watchtower. However, the founding of the current city of Teruel dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically in 1171, when King Alfonso II of Aragon established it as a military plaza to protect the Christian border against the Muslims.
During the Middle Ages, Teruel developed as a fortified city with a complex defensive system, including walls and towers high for the time. The coexistence between Christians, Muslims and Jews led to a unique Mudejar art, visible in its towers and the cathedral. In 1177 charters were granted to attract settlers. The city reached up to 6,000 inhabitants before suffering the plague. In the Modern Age, Teruel maintained its strategic importance and was the scene of conflicts such as the Carlist Wars, which led to its defenses being reinforced until the 19th century.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, Teruel has experienced moderate urban development, preserving its historical heritage and promoting cultural tourism. Recent events include the promotion of its Mudejar art and the annual celebration of the legend of the Lovers of Teruel, which attracts visitors.
