I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Montreal y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The Montreal site was long inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the St. Lawrence Iroquois. French explorer Jacques Cartier was the first to arrive in 1535. The town, originally called Ville-Marie, was founded in 1642 as a Catholic mission by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance.
Following the British conquest in 1760, Montreal flourished as a fur trading center and later as the economic and industrial capital of Canada. Its port and railway made it a thriving metropolis in the 19th century, attracting a diverse population of Irish, Scottish and Italian immigrants, who added to its French heritage.
The 20th century consolidated Montreal as a cultural center. Events such as the 1967 World's Fair (Expo 67) and the 1976 Olympic Games projected it onto the world stage. In recent decades, it has become a global leader in creative and technological industries, including artificial intelligence and video games, without losing its distinctive Quebec character.
