City: Cascais

Cascais is the aristocratic jewel of Portugal's Atlantic coast. What began as a humble fishing village evolved in the late 19th century into the summer retreat of the Portuguese royal family and European nobility. Today it blends an elegant historic center of cobbled lanes with imposing ocean cliffs, 19th-century mansions turned into museums, top-quality seafood cuisine and a relaxed, cosmopolitan coastal lifestyle.

Historia

History

Origins

Inhabited since the Paleolithic and used by the Romans as a fish-salting factory, Cascais developed during the Middle Ages as a strategic fishing and defensive enclave at the entrance to the Tagus estuary. In 1364, King Peter I granted it the status of a town independent from Sintra.

Development

The turning point came in 1870, when King Luís I chose the Cidadela Fortress as the court's official summer residence. This attracted the Portuguese and international high nobility and bourgeoisie, driving the construction of sumptuous chalets, the arrival of the railway in 1889 and the pioneering electrification of street lighting.

Modern era

During the Second World War, the municipality and neighboring Estoril served as neutral territory welcoming European royal families in exile and a famous den of spies that inspired the creation of James Bond. Today, Cascais is one of the municipalities with the highest quality of life in Portugal, a benchmark in urban sustainability and host of world sailing events.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

The Secret of the Santa Marta Cove

The small tidal cove beneath the bridge between the Museu Castro Guimarães and the lighthouse offers one of the most beautiful photo scenes at sunrise or at high tide.

Cresmina Dune Viewpoint at Dusk

For a magical evening away from the crowds, have a drink at the wooden viewpoint bar on the Cresmina boardwalks watching the sun sink into the Atlantic.

Restaurant Hours

Lunch is usually served from 12:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 19:30 to 22:00. Although there are some all-day options, the best seafood restaurants close their kitchens relatively early.

The 'Couvert' on the Table

The bread, butter, sardine pâté or little cheeses brought when you sit down are not a courtesy of the house; if you eat them they will be added to the bill (the cost is usually modest and is listed on the menu).

Excellent Water Quality

Tap water in Cascais is of optimal quality, completely drinkable and subject to strict European health controls.

Sun Protection and Wind

The sea breeze may stop you from feeling the heat, but the UV index is intense in summer; always use biodegradable sunscreen and sunglasses.

General Peace of Mind

Cascais is one of the safest municipalities in Europe. You can stroll in complete calm even late at night.

Beware of Waves at the Cliffs

At spots such as Boca do Inferno or the Guincho viewpoints, never climb over the safety railings: Atlantic waves and gusts of wind can be sudden and merciless.
