History
Origins
Crete was the center of the sophisticated Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1450 BC), which built palace complexes such as Knossos and Faistos, and developed trade throughout the Mediterranean. This era of splendor, filled with legends such as that of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth, ended abruptly, possibly due to the eruption of Santorini and subsequent invasions.
Development
After the Minoans, the island was ruled by the Mycenaeans, Romans and Byzantines. One of its most influential eras was the Venetian rule (1212-1669), which left an indelible mark on the architecture of port cities such as Chania and Rethymno. Later, it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, giving rise to a unique cultural mix. The island fought fiercely for its independence and finally joined Greece in 1913.
Modern era
During World War II, Crete was the scene of brave but tragic resistance at the Battle of Crete. In recent decades, the island has become an important tourist destination, appreciated for its incredible diversity, allowing visitors to combine the exploration of dream beaches with high mountain hiking and immersion in ancient history.

It's impossible. Pick one or two regions (e.g. Chania and Rethymno) and explore them well rather than spending all your time in the car trying to cover the entire island.
'Phyloxenia' is real
Cretan hospitality is deep and genuine. Accept invitations and gestures with kindness.
Respect traditions
Cretan society, especially in the interior, is traditional and has a strong code of family honor. Be respectful in your dress and behavior, especially when visiting monasteries.
tap water
Tap water is generally safe to drink in cities, but many prefer bottled water for the taste. In rural areas, it is better bottled.
Drive with extreme caution
Mountain roads are narrow, winding and often without protective barriers. Locals drive fast. Take your time and let them get ahead of you.
