History
Origins
Originally called Zamá ('City of Dawn'), Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans. It served as an important port for maritime trade, specializing in the exchange of turquoise and jade, and was a walled fortress that prospered between the 13th and 15th centuries, surviving some 70 years after the Spanish occupation.
Development
After its abandonment, the jungle reclaimed the city, which remained hidden from the outside world until it was documented by explorers in the 19th century. For much of the 20th century, Tulum was a remote and quiet destination, known only to intrepid travelers and backpackers seeking an unspoiled paradise, long in the shadow of Cancun's massive development.
Modern era
In the 21st century, Tulum underwent an explosive transformation, going from a hippie haven to a world-famous luxury destination. It became synonymous with a 'boho-chic' lifestyle, attracting celebrities, yogis and influencers. This rapid growth has brought with it an incredible design, food and music scene, but also significant sustainability and infrastructure challenges.

Choose your Side of the Beach
The northern area of the beach (near Playa Paraíso) is quieter and more public. The southern area is where the most exclusive and fashionable hotels, restaurants and beach clubs are located.
Look for Lesser Known Cenotes
While Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos are impressive, they are often crowded. Research smaller, less touristy cenotes for a more intimate experience.
Dress for the Occasion
The dress code is 'boho-chic'. Think linen, cotton, hats and sandals. It's relaxed but stylish.
Respect the Environment
Tulum prides itself on its ecological conscience. Don't leave litter, use biodegradable sunscreen, and support businesses that practice sustainability.
BIODEGRADABLE Sunscreen
It is a requirement to enter most cenotes and the Sian Ka'an Reserve to protect the fragile aquatic ecosystem.
The Heat and Humidity are Intense
Drink plenty of water, seek shade during peak sun hours, and wear light, breathable clothing.
Be careful on the Beach Road at Night
The beach road is dark and narrow. Avoid walking or cycling alone at night. Taxis are the safest option.
Cash and ATMs
Many places, especially on the beach, are cash only. Use the automatic teller machines (ATM) that are inside supermarkets or banks in town; Those on the beach are known for having high commissions and cloning risk.
