Originally called Zamá ('City of Dawn'), Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans. It served as an important port for maritime trade, specializing in the exchange of turquoise and jade, and was a walled fortress that prospered between the 13th and 15th centuries, surviving some 70 years after the Spanish occupation.
After its abandonment, the jungle reclaimed the city, which remained hidden from the outside world until it was documented by explorers in the 19th century. For much of the 20th century, Tulum was a remote and quiet destination, known only to intrepid travelers and backpackers seeking an unspoiled paradise, long in the shadow of Cancun's massive development.
In the 21st century, Tulum underwent an explosive transformation, going from a hippie haven to a world-famous luxury destination. It became synonymous with a 'boho-chic' lifestyle, attracting celebrities, yogis and influencers. This rapid growth has brought with it an incredible design, food and music scene, but also significant sustainability and infrastructure challenges.
