The Silk Exchange of Valencia

Region
Spain
Region: Valencian Community

The Valencian Community is the essence of the Levantine Mediterranean, a land bathed in the sun and marked by the imprint of ancient cultures. Its capital, Valencia, is a city that perfectly combines the futuristic avant-garde of the City of Arts and Sciences with the tradition of its historic center and the animation of its Fallas. The region is a tapestry of contrasts: from the endless fine sand beaches and bustling tourist destinations of the Costa Blanca like Benidorm, to the quiet inland towns and rugged mountains of Castellón. It is the birthplace of paella, a place where the orange blossom aroma of its orange groves mixes with the roar of gunpowder at its festivals. Visiting the Valencian Community is immersing yourself in a happy, bright and deeply Mediterranean culture.

Festivals & Events

The Fallas of Valencia

From March 15 to 19.

World Heritage Site. One of the most spectacular parties in the world. Gigantic satirical papier-mâché monuments ('fallas') fill the streets. Every day at 2:00 p.m. the 'mascletà' (a gunpowder earthquake) is celebrated and everything culminates in the 'Cremà', the burning of the monuments.

Bonfires of San Juan (Alicante)

From June 20 to 24.

The great festival of Alicante, sister of the Fallas. Monuments of papier-mâché ('bonfires') are built that are also burned on the night of San Juan. The 'mascletàs' and fireworks on the beach are impressive.

Moors and Christians (Alcoy and Villajoyosa)

April (Alcoy) and July (Villajoyosa).

The most widespread festival in the province of Alicante. Spectacular parades that recreate the battles between Moors and Christians. In Villajoyosa the 'Desembarco' stands out, a naval battle on the beach at dawn.
