Founded around 1100 BC.by the Phoenicians with the name of Gadir, it is considered the oldest city in Western Europe.It was an important commercial port for the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans (Gades), who left an impressive theater as testimony.
Its second golden age came in the 18th century, when it obtained a monopoly on trade with the Americas.The city was filled with palace-houses of merchants, with their characteristic lookout towers to watch the arrival of the ships.It was also in Cádiz, besieged by the French, where the first Spanish Constitution was proclaimed in 1812, 'La Pepa', making it a symbol of freedom.
