Originally inhabited by the indigenous Guaraní people, the region was first explored by the Spanish Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1542, who documented the falls as 'Saltos de Santa María'.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the city began to be formally organized. In 1939 the Iguazú National Park was created, laying the foundations for the ecological tourism that defines the identity of the city today.
The construction of the Itaipu Dam in the 1970s radically transformed the city's economy and demographics, turning it into a global energy hub and a multicultural urban center with more than 80 ethnic groups living in harmony.
