Explora el fascinante pasado de Cienfuegos y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Although the region was inhabited by indigenous peoples, the city of Cienfuegos is relatively young by Cuban standards. Its bay was visited by Christopher Columbus, but it was not until the 19th century that a settlement was planned.
The city was founded on April 22, 1819 by a group of French immigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana, led by Don Luis De Clouet. This French heritage is the reason for its unique urban layout in Cuba, with wide streets, grid planning and a refined neoclassical style. It grew rapidly as an important port for the trade of sugar cane, tobacco and coffee.
Unlike many other Cuban cities, Cienfuegos has preserved its architectural coherence. In 2005, its Historic Center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the best example of urban planning of the early 19th century in Latin America. Today, it remains an important industrial port and one of the cleanest and quietest cities in Cuba, offering visitors a vision of refined, Caribbean urbanism.
