I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Playa del Carmen y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Originally known as Xaman-Há ('Northern Waters' in Mayan), Playa del Carmen was a starting point for the Mayan pilgrimage to the sacred island of Cozumel. The area served as an important trading center for the Mayan civilization during its postclassic period (1000-1500 AD).
After the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the region maintained a low profile for centuries, remaining primarily a remote fishing village. Its transformation began in the second half of the 20th century, driven by the development of Cozumel as a diving destination and the opening of the Cancún International Airport in 1974. Playa served as the ferry dock to Cozumel, slowly attracting visitors who discovered its laid-back charm and beautiful beaches.
In the 1990s, Playa del Carmen experienced explosive growth, becoming one of the fastest growing cities in Latin America. What was a fishing village was transformed into a first-class tourist destination, with the pedestrianization of Fifth Avenue as the central axis. Today, it is a nerve center of the Riviera Maya, known for its international atmosphere, its gastronomic offer and its vibrant nightlife.
